how does vitamin K work? one of my clients dogs ate a block of rat poison last year and the vet put her on Vitamin K for 3 months to stop the anticoagulants in the poison taking effect. does it have the opposite effect on rats ?

@dean, try the wikipedia page on "warfarine", as I am not an expert in poisons... it should work very well against rodents.

I think lintworm means vitamin K antagonist, or anti-vitamin k. Vitamin k is important in the system which helps blood to clot. By removing / blocking vitamin k from this system, blood doesn't clot as well. This is the basis for some poisons and some medications (including warfarin). It's got a similar effect on many animals - warfarin was first discovered when cows which ate sweet clover started bleeding unexpectedly after small procedures.

funny, I upload all nice pictures of rarely seen species and the biggest discussion is about black rats :p

@devilfish, you are right

Thanks guys, reading the post I thought that the vitamin K was going to kill the rats, I knew how warfarin works, I was a bit confused with the K bit sorry for any further confusion:o
Lintworm I have commented on some of your fantastic photos too.
