Givskud Zoo - Java macaque exhibit

  • Media owner Toddy

The island exhibit for java macaques (Macaca fascicularis) in the Asian section in Givskud Zoo. This exhibit was opened in 1996 and consists of three islands with very shallow water between them. The macaques often play in the shallow water but don’t venture into the moat (which was the hope when the exhibit was built).

I really like this exhibit, it's a bit an odd design, but it seems like it works for the monkeys.

Givskud Zoo -- Java Macaque

Friend of mine had a pet Java Macaque in the early 1970s, which used to swim freely in the gareden pond. I would not expect water to be an effective barrier for the species.
