Greater bamboo lemur

A teaser of what is yet to come.

A greater bamboo lemur (Prolemur simus) eating a young shoot of giant bamboo, it's favourite food.

Unfortunately they are critically endangered, with probably less than 250 mature individuals left. And this is one of the 2 individuals left in the accessible area of Ranomafana NP. They are not shy but very difficult to find. These 2 bamboo lemurs are the highlight of my time in Madagascar so far :).

More photos will follow, but internet is not that fast in the middle of the national park.

Thanks, this is one of the last 2 individuals in the accessible part, a survey a few years ago indicated a total of about 50 individuals, but I suppose that number has gone down since....

Now that's what I call a proper animal :)
There have been some items of good news about this species in the past couple of years, so it is depressing to read bad news now.

I think this species needs more help than those boring pandas... Fortunately the only zoo in Madagascar with this species is breeding them now and zoos in Europe also have started breeding. All captive animals are managed by the EEP, I hope the zoo population will slowly but steady increase, because it may well be the last hope for this amazing animal.
