Red-Fronted Brown in Isalo

  • Media owner Lemurs

The browns are the ringleaders when it comes to raiding the campsite and stealing fruit.
Worth noting that as this photograph was taken in Isalo National Park, this individual is a true Red-Fronted Lemur (Eulemur rufifrons) rather than the very similar Rufous Lemur (Eulemur rufus), which is only found in the north-east of Madagascar.

This taxon comprises the majority of "red-fronted" found in European collections, with relatively few individuals belonging to E. rufus being held in captivity. However, few if any hybrids between the two taxa are known in captivity - although they look very alike, they are not especially closely related; rufifrons is the sister taxon to fulvus, albifrons and sanfordi, whilst rufus is close kin to collaris and cinereiceps.

Yeah, that's what I meant :p the error is especially egregious considering I had the range-map from Mittermeier et al (2010) in front of me when I typed that!
