It was excellent camouflage. My birding guide almost ran over the bird because we didn't see it - but our Masai guide did and we stopped just in time. When we got out to see if it was OK (because it was just sitting on the ground and not moving) it jumped up and ran away making lots of noise. Even standing over the egg it was still damned hard to see. So the female running away and attracting our attention was a ploy to divert us from the egg.
