How common did you find this species? In all 3 of my visits to parts of this species' African range I found them not very rare but fairly uncommon which I thought was surprising compared to how common the species is in Europe.
In Tanzania I found them occasionally, the similar Black-headed Herons seemed to be more common, but in Uganda the Grey's appeared more common than the Black-headed. I guess it also depends on other factors too (but I don't know what they are).
