Odense Zoo - King penguins

Two king penguins inside Falkland Islands exhibit that makes up the fourth part of the Oceanium in Odense Zoo. This gorgeous exhibit houses king penguins, gentoo penguins and rockhopper penguins and is one of the absolute best exhibits for antarctic penguins in Europe.
Both the king penguins and gentoo penguins have bred several times in this exhibit.

The Oceanium in Odense Zoo is themed as a journey through South America starting from the rainforests in the north going down through the Amazon basin and ending in the Falkland Islands. It is one of the largest projects in any Danish zoo to date and also one of the absolute best. The Oceanium is the cornerstone of the South American theme in Odense and opened in 2001.

I have greatly enjoyed the pictures from Odense that you have been uploading the latest few days, Toddy.

Incidentally, I was wondering how you would rate Odense Zoo in comparison with Aalborg Zoo? Both are city zoos, created in the 1930s; they are of comparable size and so are their collections. Aalborg may have a few more "star species" such as African elephant, pygmy hippo and polar bear, but this set of pictures of yours has made me suspect that Odense, in fact, might be a better and more interesting zoo than Aalborg? For example, the big cat exhibits seem to be much better in Odense than in Aalborg, right?

I haven´t visited any of these two zoos but I have watched many features on them on Danish tv, checked out their web sites a lot etc...

Odense Zoo have been building an expanding with a tremendous pace since 1995. While I would place Aalborg Zoo in a top-7 of the Danish zoos I would place Odense Zoo in a top-3. In fact, Odense Zoo is my personal favourite Danish zoo.

Odense Zoo don't have many unique are particularly rare species but the exhibit quality is extraordinarily high.

Thanks!

OK, now I am getting qurious indeed!

So Toddy, would you like to give us your assement of the "Top 10 zoos in Denmark" (perhaps in a thread in the forum)? There are a number of Scandinavian forumsters at ZooChat so I think that I would not be only one interested. You have in other posts mentioned the difference between "zoos" and "wildlife parks", but what if you call it a list of the "TOP 10 ZOOLOGICAL ESTABLISHMENTS IN DENMARK"?

I would love that - especially since I have become a bit more interested in travelling since I bought myself my wonderful Nikon D60 a few months ago... and just today realised that for instance Odense Zoo is only a 2 hour train ride from Copenhagen...

I guess I can make a personal subjective list of the best zoos in Denmark according to me. Stay tuned for a new thread in the Denmark forum shortly...
