This is a really great photo as it illustrates the overwhelming popularity of not only baby animals but zoos in general. Families are willing to bundle up and stamp their feet in the wintry depths of December just for a chance to gawk at a young giraffe....it is wonderful to see!
My brother said the zoo looked really busy today, to the point he phoned me to see why it might be so busy (they weren't at the zoo but using the adjoining park and ride). I said there's been a baby giraffe 'but I wouldn't of thought it would make the zoo that much busier' - obviously I was wrong!
@Javan Rhino The baby giraffe and elephant helped, but it was also a beautiful, clear, frosty day in Chester and people are at a loose end in the limbo between Christmas and New Year.
There were probably more people at the zoo today than in the whole of a winter during the 1980s.*
This is amazing 15 yeras ago I was at marwell when they had a baby giraffe born which was also my 40th birthday, I went back the next day (I had 2 days stopping at the hotel next door.) when the G. house was reopened. hardly any one there in comparison, I think the TV programme has helped here.
When she was born, I was asked to get photographs of mother Tula for the press and TV news. There was nobody other than me there, and I had to stand for quite some time to get a half decent shot.
