It is interesting to know that the moose exhibit was arguably the best thing in the entire zoo and now it is gone (along with the Dall sheep mountain, Wolf Woods and Australian zone) to make way for elephants. I'm supportive of a new elephant complex as the current one is badly outdated, but it is a true shame that the establishment didn't choose to build a new elephant exhibit in a different part of the zoo.
My vote would be to use undeveloped land or knock down the Herbivore/Carnivore area since almost all of those exhibits are grossly outdated but I understand that would take away too many star animals from the collection for a long time.
The facility is expected to support the following exhibit animals, visitors and staff, and their activities:-
1. Species and population of primary exhibit animal: 5 African elephants including multiple bull elephants
2. Other animals to be exhibited: African impalas, Smaller African hoofstock such as impala, antelope, gazelle or red river hogs and possibly large African birds such as ostrich
It is interesting that Milwaukee is aiming to hold up to 4 bull African Elephants...basically emulating what Birmingham did with its own elephant complex a couple of years ago.
