That's a large mini-lake in the background, which is great for the animals in the summer.

I love it when bears and wolves are mixed in a big enough exhibit! I believe this to be a successful concept everywhere it has been tried?

At the Grouse Mountain Wildlife Refuge in Vancouver, Canada, there were 2 grizzlies mixed with about 4 wolves. After two weeks together one of the bears killed a wolf and the concept was abandoned forever. However, that is an exception to the rule.

OK! Point taken. Maybe it it not as easy as that. But do you know about the size of the enclosure in which this occurred?

I'm no longer getting notified whenever some responds to a photo comment, but I scrolled through the gallery and saw that you had posted. I believe that the grizzly enclosure was about 5 acres, and a long time ago I actually posted 10 photos of the Grouse Mountain Wildlife Refuge here on ZooChat. The bear exhibit is literally on top of a mountain and is snowed in all winter long, while the wolves now have their own 2.5 acre habitat at the base of the mountain. The only other animals there, beside the abundant native wildlife, are the raptors for the bird show.

The lake is even bigger than you can see on this photo ;)
Regarding the bears I think that there is a big difference when you are talking about grizzly bears and black bears.
Fun fact: These bears all come from a North American zoo, where they have been trained to stand up and beg for food during feeding times. In Ree Park visitors can participate in throwing food down the bears, but are instructed NOT to throw any food to a bear when it is standing up. This way they hope to remove any trace of this begging behavior.
