Detroit Zoo - Arctic Ring of Life

“Beyond the tree line, trees cannot grow because the climate is too cold or dry. Much of Nunavut lies north of the arctic tree line where the summers are too cold to support tree life. Instead, the vegetation consists mostly of mosses, grasses, lichens, with some willow shrubs and bearberry plants.

The Arctic Ring of Life was designed to mimic the arctic landscape of Nunavut. You are crossing our tree line now. The area you just passed through is landscaped with spruce trees, which are typical of the boreal forest in the Arctic. As you travel further into the Arctic Ring of Life the trees give way to shrubs and grasses, which are typical plant species of the arctic tundra, north of the tree line.”
