The rocky grassland around the kopje in the Katanga Hill lion exhibit in Ree Park – Ebeltoft Safari, Denmark. This HUGE new lion exhibit opened in 2009 and is one of the absolute best in Europe. Visitors experience the lions from a wooden walkway and some viewing windows inside the large kopje. The exhibit is one hectare or 2,5 acres in size.

The exhibit itself is located in a very elevated terrain and consists of three parts: a low-lying swamp part, a steep wooded slope and some open grassland located around a large kopje on a hilltop. This is some of the rocky grassland located around the kopje. The large rock in front is heated and the lions often lie here, especially because of the view! These lions have a 180 degrees panorama view of the huge savannah in Ree Park with all sorts of African hoofstock. Pure luxury for these lions.
The whole exhibit is adapted to the natural landscape and heavily vegetated with trees, bushes and tall grass creating a superb lion habitat.

The lions living at Katanga Hill as of 2009 are a mixed group. The young male Eisi is a pure Kalahari lion from Basel Zoo while the three female lions are hybrid lions from Borås Zoo. In the near future more Kalahari lions will be imported from Africa to create and pure-bred group.

WOW!!! This is about as good as it can get within a zoo setting, I believe. I remember communicating with you here at the site about this exhibit before it was opened. So thrilled to see these pictures now!

Absolutely great!

A 2.5 acre lion enclosure? It looks amazing, and thanks for the information Toddy!

I thought you guys might like it ;) To tell the truth, I was pretty thrilled about it too. It is an excting visitor experience and I like how the lions can choose between four different "habitats": swamp, forest, grassland and rocky grassland + the view they have from their heated rock.

Unfortunately, the lions were not out on their heated rock the day I visitied as it was simply too windy. They have 2.5 acres and yet the same lions stayed in the exact same places sleeping all day long. That's just lions for you :p
