If a carnivore species arrives from overseas in the UK, they must undergo a six-month rabies quarantine often off-show. I don't know if things are run differentley in Germany.
I imagine the poor cat who has to live half a year in quarantaine... That would for me animal abuse.
I guess since the EU is tightend, all is changed. If you bring a animal from one US-State to another, you also don't need such quarantaine (stupid exaple, but it is a bit like that).
Also would this be stupid for animals who dont have a very long lifespan...
I'm not very good with legislation but the rabies quarantine is to do with the UK being regarded as "rabies free" and as such rabies is a "Notifiable" disease, control of such diseases comes under the Animal Health Act 1981 (revised 2002).
In my experience rabies quarantine is not always off show provided the on show accommodation has been declared suitable by a vet, but barrier husbandry techniques are adopted and all individuals within that enclosure are considered to be "in quarantine". Sometimes, however, off show quarantine can provide an adjustment period for the individual.
Of course some have queried whether there is any point in having rabies quarantine from individuals coming from within the EU, and obviously British wildlife can come in and out of outdoor quarantine accommodation just as easily as any other enclosures!
Rabies quarantine can indeed be done in an enclosure that looks more or less normal (and on-show) to the general public. Animal care staff looking after the individual have to have anti-rabies injections which I'm told are rather painful. Good point about British wildlife coming & going in the enclosure.
I've had the course of rabies vaccines because I've worked with bats in the past - not that bad except made me a bit poorly, and it's annoying to keep having the boosters.
