Sarus Crane

Wings of Asia Sarus Crane Walks Straight Towards Me!

He's very curious and approaches cautiously.
I am astonished that a pair of sarus cranes can be kept in a walk-through in the breeding season! Such tall birds with such long beaks and such short tempers would seem like a disaster waiting to happen

@gentle lemur One time I got to chat with one of the keepers in the aviary. They said that the pair had never bred, so therefore no needed territorial or parental aggression. The only issue is to not get between the male and female. They are a really nice pair of cranes that have been together for over 35 years. They were part of the original animal collection at Crandon Park Zoo and are living out their golden years at Zoo Miami.

@Sarus Crane I trust the keeper to know his individual birds, but I would still be nervous if I entered that enclosure. I have seen several enclosures with old unpaired cranes that were equipped with tall fences and wide stand-offs and which bore warning notices too.
