This photo gives a much better view of the orangutan enclosure than I was ever able to get... the last few times I visited this window was boarded up because the apes had smashed it once or twice.
@Giant Panda Now that you've put me on the spot, I'm going to go out on a limb and state that Saint Louis Zoo is arguably the #1 zoo for orangutans in America. I'll go for a top 6 and that list might look something like this: Saint Louis, Woodland Park, Omaha (I love the 65-foot fake trees as the orangs actually use them), Sedgwick County, San Diego (phenomenal visitor section with huge viewing windows) and Atlanta (a dozen red apes).
THE 6 BEST:
Saint Louis
Woodland Park
Omaha
Sedgwick County
San Diego
Atlanta
THE 7 WORST:
Pittsburgh
Brookfield
Toronto (in Canada)
Cleveland
Fort Wayne
Racine
Birmingham
@snowleopard If I didn't know you better, I'd think it suspicious that your list of the worst 7 lines up very closely (exactly, in fact) with a list of zoos that keep their orangutans indoors year-round
@Coelacanth18 You know me too well. Keeping a captive species of great ape entirely indoors is very poor in my opinion. Those 7 zoos should build some outdoor yards!
