Omaha had Sable Antelope when I visited in 2008 and in 2012 but very few major USA zoos still keep such a magnificent species. Does anyone have a list of sites in the USA with Sable Antelope?
@snowleopard I know Philadelphia used to have Sable Antelope in with the Zebras in the African Plains habitat, before they were replaced with Tony the Rhino. I'm not sure where the Sables went.
@snowleopard Gladys Porter Zoo, Zoo Miami, and San Diego Zoo Safari Park come to mind. There are 113 animals in 13 institutions but I don't have an exact breakdown. Some of the population is generic while some is the nominate subspecies.
I've seen Sable Antelope at Omaha, Miami, San Diego Zoo Safari Park, Baton Rouge and DAK...all 5 places mentioned thus far. However, I cannot recall seeing them anywhere else and I'd be keen to know if anyone knows what other institutions showcase the species.
@snowleopard Jay also mentioned Gladys Porter. In addition to those 6, as of 2015, Busch Gardens, Toronto, and Jackson also held them, albeit in small numbers at the latter two. They are more numerous in safari parks/open-range zoos: Lee Simmons, B Bryan Preserve, Fossil Rim, Safari West, The Wilds, and Micanopy. There are some in the private sector as well.
