tortoises in the beaver enclosure

August 2013
most of the enclosure was water (deep pool at the front, shallow at the back, and dry right at the very back and at one end although I don't think the tortoises could access the end area). The tortoises were all up the back of course, mostly standing in shallow water. It must have been pretty depressing for them.

I wonder if they mix up tortoise and turtle, a lot of tortoises can suffer lung/respiratory problems in damp areas especially the leopard tortoise which at least one of these looks like.

It's things like this that tends to put me off visiting zoos in some places, the memory lives to long in my mind:(

It's a shame they couldn't get the husbandry anywhere close to how they should be kept! That deep water is an accident waiting to happen... If they don't de of other reasons first!

yes, the small middle one is a leopard tortoise. The two others in the middle are red-footed tortoises I think, and I think the others are all African spurred tortoises. (But I'm happy to be corrected :))

I know it's an old picture but I can confirm that the tortoises at COEX (African spurred and red-footed but no leopard) have a new enclosure which isn't perfect but still way better than this one.

I think the beavers also have a new exhibit but I'm not sure.
