female Helmeted Hornbill (Rhinoplax vigil)

these guys really are dinosaurian in appearance!

It was my very first time seeing the species, so that was exciting. They are amazing birds. The male and female were in separate aviaries and neither was in a good position for photos really. The male was right up at the wire so I couldn't get any shots without the mesh. The female was near the back but the aviaries were very deep and there was a stand-off barrier, so there's a bit of haze from the wire in front in all the photos I took of her.
 
They are a magnificent sight to behold.

Shame that the casque is now rather undignified also known as red Ivory ....
