The hard floor and chain on the leg doesn't look too cool.

I agree with you on that. The chain on his leg is a relic of the past. None of the other elephants have one and it is hardly used these days.
The hard floor was made before Copenhagen Zoo decided that they wanted a sand floor, so only the females have it. What you can't see in this picture though, is that just to the right of him is a huge pile of sand bigger than himself
