The gibbon house

Copenhagen Zoo, March 1, 2009. In its own unpretentious way the gibbon house is a very cool piece of Nordic architecture! But the part of it actually assigned to the monkeys are smaller than my bedroom and not very innovatively furnished.

I'm sure that the apes spend a great deal of time in their tiny house, as Denmark is chilly for a good part of the year. It is really too bad that the indoor area isn't larger and packed with more climbing structures.

It might be an interesting piece of architecture, but that doesn't make it a good Gibbon House. The greatest costs of any building are the bottom and top; ie the floor and foundations and the ceiling/roof. These, plus the services, are pretty consistent costs. To then make the walls so low, just for looks (questionable aesthetics), is defenceless. It is a great pity that the keepers didn't have the power to sack the architect... Lets hope he is not still employed designing zoo cages.
