Even with lush foliage on the island (in the summer) the amount of land is quite small for gibbons, and there is definitely a lack of climbing structures and space.
I will have to disagree with you here snowleopard. The gibbons here have a fine exhibit. Not fantastic but certainly good enough. They have more land area than many other gibbons I have seen. Their climbing frames allows them to run great distances accross the poles (which they do) and the ropes lets them swing around in large circles (a cool sight).
In the summertime there is so much foliage at the bottom that the gibbons can completely disappear there. There also used to be a huge willow tree standing on the island for the gibbons to use, but a storm knocked it down about 20 years ago. And with gibbons living there now, it is impossible to grow another such tree.
