White rhino enclosure, Copenhagen Zoo, April 2009
At about 3000 square meters (appr 3/4 af an acre), this enclosure is a part of the 15 000 sqaure meters big African savanna at Copenhagen Zoo. Take a look at the tree stumps in some of this photos. They make it impossible for the rhinos to get access to the other 11 000 square meters, but the smaller animals can go into the rhino territory when they like. Actually, this arrangement disappoints me, beause in the original sketches shown for the savanna, the rhinos were supposed to have access to the rest of it.
Still - a better white rhino enclosure than in many other zoos.
I like the way the living trees are protected. It might not look "authentic", but it is effective and no hotwire is used.
