The enclosure that Chiang Mei "roamed" for decades

Big old elephant male at Copenhagen Zoo, spent decades on this enclosure. For about six hours a day, that is. The rest of the time he was locked inside a so much smaller prison cell inside the house.

Makes you want to be sick.

Is the exhibit being used for any other animal? This could make a nice pig exhibit.

Sick? This exhibit was built in 1928, remember? When people saw it back then they asked the zoo why they had given the elephants so much space. Surely they didn't need that much?:p

The camels used this exhibit briefly while their own was being renovated but now the old elephant house is used for an anniversary exhibition about the zoo.

Ah, come on, Toddy! This damned prison was used until a couple of years ago, that´s the point!

I don´t believe the word "sick" even starts to descibe it!

I am not saying that this is in any way a good or even sufficient exhibit for a bull elephant. But it was built in 1928 and times were different. Such is it with many exhibits in zoos today.

Not just that people would put the world's largest land mammal in this abomination, but the fact that the poor creature had to bear it for "decades" and that it was a treat to go out into this "yard". It is sickening.

I am not trying to defend this exhibit. I guess I am just trying to make a comment about some of the words used here on ZooChat. Words like "abomination" and "animal prison" gets tossed around a lot these days, sometimes unfairly. I think we should save those words for when they really are the right ones in the truly cruel cases. And this exhibit is not even in use anymore, so why discuss and comment on it? It is the past. Let us move on.

My post, "Makes you want to be sick", was in reference to the fact that the elephant actually had to live here (something, I think, many forget). It was more me thinking out loud, imagining the poor animal's pitiful life and was not aimed at the Copenhagen Zoo as their new house does look very good (although I do think the outdoor areas are too small).

PS. the conditions in this enclosure are far worse than pretty much all Western prisons (especially when you compare the size ratio between humans and pachyderms) so I think the phrase was perfectly justified in this case.
