Later the gaur exhibit was used as a temporary holding exhibit for white rhinos while the yak exhibit was merged with the hippopotamus exhibit to give the latter more space. Both of these exhibits no longer exists as the new Elephant House is located partly on this site.
I'm glad to have been able to see a bit of the old classic Copenhagen Zoo; partly because I like historic exhibits and also because it helps me to assess changes better. My dad gave me photos from his visit in the 1970s and I uploaded them some months ago; I would have given so much for having been able to visit the place then! (as well as every other zoo I know of obviously!)
The old Copenhagen Zoo may have looked run-down in places but it certainly had a charm to it that no new zoo can replicate. I am also glad I got to know it before it has progressed to become what it is today.
On a side note they old Pheasantry is to be torn down shortly. The building simply is functioning properly anymore which is such a shame as great breeding success had been achieved in here with many avian species, especially congo peafowl. It building is completely covered in plants which produces a forest effect that takes years to grown in new exhibits.
