These brown bears are rather frugivorous, yet omnivorous (I agree). However, they have never been known to see foxes as prey animal.
Personally, I would love to see some of the Middle Eastern fox species exhibited and bred in Europe (better). Blandford's or sand as the rarer counterparts to fennec.
Skansen keeps European brownbear and red fox. Kolmården used to keep european brownbear and wolf but this spring the wolfpack was put down because of age.
Quite recently, Heidelberg and Koethen Zoos in Germany have set up a Syriacus-group to ensure that a captive assurance population of this threatened brown bear species may be created in European zoos.
Unfortunately, the situation in Europe with brown bears is somewhat disastrous and suffers from a distinct lack of interest on the part of most European zoos in Continental Europe - with the notable exception of perhaps Scandinavian zoos (where the species is mor secure than elsewhere) and consequent disengagement from highlighting and debating European conservation issues. Even the EAZA Campaign European Carnivores' has seemed not be able to change minds within the zoo community (where it has in case of f.i. wolverine ..).
Too much emphasis in Europe is put on rescueing problems bears and putting them in zoos essentially to live out their lives in captivity without any opportunities for breeding and other natural behaviors. In consequence, no spaces are left for conservation assurance and breeding programs for threatened European (Pyrenean, Marsicano, Balkan, ...) and Eurasian bear species (Tibetan blue and Himalayan brown et cetera ..) .
