The problem with holding all the stock in the region at one facility is the potential for disease to wipeout the entire population in one fell swoop.
 
I don't know if it was the quokka exhibit (I never saw them) but I remember maras at Melbourne too, in about 1992 I think it would have been.

It was an exhibit just to the right of the entrance with low moat barriers. And if it was 1992 then they might have hung around for a few years longer...that's the year I was born.
 
Referring back to PAT's original question, this exhibit was indeed destroyed when making way for the pandas. The current Brazilian tapir exhibit is the old brolga enclosure across from the elephant house.
 
That is the exhibit I'm thinking of with the tapirs in it. Maybe the palm trees are what reminded me of the tapir exhibit. Thanks for that. :)
