@DavidBrown - He did indeed survive long enough for me to see him, and barring any breaking news is still alive now my concern was more due to the fact he is extremely elderly rather than any actual poor health - he arrived at Zoo Duisburg as a juvenile in 1975, as part of a family group captured in Venezuela during March of that year, and hence is approximately 44 years old. He currently holds the lifespan record for the species, which was previously held by Apure, one of the adult males captured with him and who was long-resident at Zoo Duisburg until dying at the age of 40 in 2006.
Incidentally, the lifespan record for the species prior to Apure was set by a male of the nominate race who died at the age of 30 at Pittsburgh Zoo.
@TeaLovingDave I would love to see a boto. I was hoping to get to Pittsburgh, but obviously it expired before that happened. It looks like I'll have to get to the Amazon someday, as no trips to Germany are in the future. Thanks for the detailed history, and glad you got at least one more visit in.
@DavidBrown Never mind one more visit, it was a first visit! Picked up the last Mountain Anoa outside native range, and my first Goodfellow's Tree Kangaroo and Tasmanian Devil, on the same day.
