If this is indeed a dolphin and not a porpoise, then sadly it's the first one I've ever seen round here. Possibly a victim of Storm Emma which hit the area two days ago. The next photo shows what was in its wound.
 
It is a dolphin, probably a short-beaked common dolphin. The wound looks like surgery, so I wonder if the missing portion has been taken for post-mortem analysis.
