South Entrance - African Elephant Statue

Do you have any insight into why they have an African elephant statue when the zoo does not have this species? Did they have African elephants at some point and this is from that era?

@DavidBrown The statue is fairly new (2010) and was part of a $5 million renovation of the zoo's south entrance. The elephant weighs 2 tons and is 19 feet tall, but I have no idea why the bronze sculpture is an African elephant and not an Asian one.

@DavidBrown They have a lot of statues at this part of the entrance of animals the zoo doesn't have, and did not have at the time either. No idea why.
