Rex the Lion Statue

Now that is an awesome statue. I love animal statues in zoos and there is nothing that says "welcome to the world's greatest zoo" than a huge lion ready to pounce at the entrance. A wonderful image to welcome visitors to the facility.

I just looked up this new addition to the zoo and the bronze statue is apparently 27 feet tall and weighs more than 20,000 pounds. Holy smokes Batman, that thing must be impressive to stand under!

@snowleopard I just dropped off my husband at the airport, so this was taken at 7:00 am this morning.

Dang it! Would have been so cool to see, but just another reason to come back to the awesome San Diego zoo.

Wow. Can't wait to see this when I go to San Diego! Love how its arm is the only thing holding it up.

As simply awesome as this statue is (and this is awesome), I find it quite humorous that this big grand lion statue gets built and the lion still are shafted to their small Elephant Odyssey cage. That $1.7 mil (!) could have been spent improving conditions for the lions. Hard to really complain though because man...
