Dyreparken NBV - Macaw aviary

  • Media owner Hvedekorn
  • Date added
Housing green-winged macaws and budgerigars. The area in front with the ladder and logs used to be an exhibit for coatis, but now that these cannot be kept anymore because of the EU blacklist, the macaw aviary is going to be extended into this area, reaching twice its original size.

Dyreparken NBV is a tiny zoo in the town of Hjørring, Denmark. Other than a zoo, it's a workplace for mentally handicapped people, belonging to the titular NBV ("Nordjyllands Beskyttede Værksted", "Northern Jutland's Sheltered Workshop") which organizes work for disabled people. Other than the handicapped workers, the zoo also employs one trained zookeeper.

Area-wise, it's - as mentioned - probably one of the tiniest zoos in the world, not much larger than your average backyard, and as such it only keeps around 25 species of animals, the majority of these species being small mammals and small birds. Most of the animals are housed in fine living conditions.

The zoo has free entry and is always open, though to access the indoor exhibits you need to visit when the employees are at work which is during standard work hours from Monday to Friday.

March 2018.
