The main elephant indoor enclosure, there are 3 boxes to the right. This shows how quickly elephant enclosures from the nineties have become outdated...
@PAT No, only 3 boxes to the right hand side and to the left, just out of view is a small pool. So compared to modern elephant houses it is on the small side, with no natural substrate and limited options to give more than a few elephants ample space.
Is there a long-term plan for a new elephant exhibit in Vienna? A zoo of this stature should perhaps have a better habitat for such an illustrious mammal...although the current exhibit seems adequate for now.
@snowleopard I dont think there is any plans for a new habitat, and honestly there isnt really room to expand unfortunately. I think this house size wise is OK, the floor has a durable plastic which is softer than concrete and they have a sand pit and pool, which is more than alot of zoos can say. I think a renovation could greatly improve it however, the floorspace could be expanded by making the visitor area smaller and pushing the fence back, and a new paint job to replace that ugly camo. The outdoor yard is on the low end of acceptable at just under an acre total, it could be improved by removing the divided area as I dont believe they have a bull, they could also fill in some of the moats and replace them with fences. Some sort of interactive feeding system would also be nice.
