It is amazing to see so many European zoos allowing visitors into the indoor quarters for large mammals as in North American zoos it is often a rarity to be let inside an elephant, giraffe, rhino or hippo barn.
@snowleopard In new developments indoor enclosures for large mammals are more than just a barn and often they follow some theme. Apart from Mediterranean Lisbon I have never seen a Giraffe, Common hippo or Elephant indoor enclosure that was off limits to visitors... And with the exception of Burgers Zoo, Leipzig, Zlin and Gelsenkirchen the same goes for Rhino. Visible indoor exhibits for other hoofstock is a bit rarer, but certainly not unheard of.
@FunkyGibbon I think it is slightly below normal, but it is still so deep that the hippo can completely submerge themselves. The doors to the outdoor enclosure are placed significantly lower than the feeding platform.....
