@ThylacineAlive I am too young for that . I was 6 when the last Sumatran rhino died in England and until 10 years ago I hardly traveled any further than Germany. My Plzen visit was extremely last minute, so I didn't manage to contact them far enough in advance to reply to my e-mail (and it seems that even behind the scenes they might be invisible).
@Giant Eland - If it is any consolation, although Panay are held at Prague, Plzen and Jihlava they are off-display at all three, and in the case of the Plzen animals are not held in the offshow area accessible to interested zoo enthusiasts.
@Kakapo the problem is that including Nanger within Gazella was found to render the latter genus polyphyletic unless it *also* included Antilope and Eudorcas, which would rather smack of over-lumping.... especially given the fact Antilope has never been classified within Gazella.
@Kakapo My point precisely you cannot lump Eudorcas and Nanger into Gazella without doing the same thing to Antilope, because the latter genus is the closest living relative of Gazella, with Nanger and Eudorcas forming a sister group to the Antilope + Gazella clade.
@Kakapo I am not going to type it all out but there are several characteristics in teeth and skulls in which Nanger and Eudorcas are very similar as opposed to Gazella and where Nanger is unique. The genetic evidence is however so strong, that this is a non-discussion really....
@ThylacineAlive If only they sent them to Bronx Zoo's mouse house which has a nocturnal section! Although I'm sure having most of them in Czech Republic is better for breeding. Would love to know why LA got them in the first place.
