@gentle lemur thanks for the ID, I’ve been wondering what these were for a while. This is within the zoo’s hippo exhibit if I am not mistaken, explaining the bits of hay in the water.
@birdsandbats That does explain things: the fish certainly look healthy and have obviously grown to a good size, which shows that the filtration and water change regime is good. But this is unsightly.
