Guyana tamandua (childrens zoo)

October 24-25, 2017
What subspecies is this one actually, if anyone knows? As far as I know, Guyana tamandua is Tamandua tetradactyla nigra and this one is definitely not one of those.

They had two (in enclosures next to each other) and they were definitely labelled Guyana tamandua. My initial hunch is to say an organization of the stature of San Diego would not label incorrectly, but then I remembered the infamous "mountain coati" sign at their Safari Park.

@Arizona Docent Some of them are definitely of the nigra subspecies (if you look for tamandua san diego zoo on Google, you find an Unstriped tamandua which is the subspecies found in Guyana) but this one definitely isn't one.

To be honest, every organization; even the greatest ones can incorrectly label some of their animals (although it is known San Diego lists their animals pretty well).

Then I assume they had Guyana in here originally and had to replace them but never changed the sign. Thanks for pointing this out.

It’s T. t. tetradactyla (as the sign says...). The only nigra in the US I’m aware of is at my home zoo, Smithsonian.
