Painted Storks are pretty common around Kuala Lumpur. If you went to Zoo Negara while in the city, you probably saw their huge free-winged colony on the lake. Birds have spread outwards from the zoo, and out of the city into the surrounding country. Totally countable population.
There was also an Hadada Ibis outside the aviary, so I thought I'd play it safe. I'm off to Kuala Selangor tomorrow, and Zoo Negara in about a week, so I guess I'll see them then.
Those particular birds could have been escapees then.
The zoo colony has a bunch of zoo species mixed in too (pelicans, etc, I think a few marabous or adjutants as well from memory).
At Kuala Selangor Taman Alam there's a little aquarium of local species near the entrance (I haven't been to it yet - next time - but you might be interested to see it).
Thanks - I am interested. I'll see what it's like. I'm going to be there all day so I should have time. The only issue I may have is it being Sunday, and full of people.
