That looks functional with a capital F, but probably among the best indoor enclosures for Chimps in Europe. Is it one big indoor enclosure, or are their possibilities for the animals to get out of each others sight?
Functional, but very good for the chimps. Don't know about Europe, but definitely the best indoor area in the UK.
There is a near identical area just next door to this one, through those steel shutters. There's also the off-show bedrooms at the back.
I watched as keepers spread some food in the space next door. The chimps were then let in so that both indoor sections were opened up. A few moments later the steel shutters to the outdoor area were opened up too, so that the chimps had access to all areas. So yes, plenty of possibilities for them to get out of each others sight.
@Benosaurus Thanks, I really like this setup based on the pictures. Just a pity they thought it necessary to theme the visitor area.... The purpose of that theming is completely lost as it is not done in the Chimp area (which is fine, because it is a lot of money wasted on aesthetics).
It reminds me somewhat of Basel, where there is also no attempt at naturalism, but where the enclosures are also very well suited to the Chimps.
