When I was in Tanzania I was surprised by how ubiquitous sunbirds are there. There were countless species spread across all of the different environments I visited; I think only starlings were equally as common. It's nice to see they are represented Stateside... any other info on who is holding/breeding them?
FYI, they fly quite fast which can make IDing them a frustrating endeavor
I unfortunately don’t know too much about zoos holding sunbirds in the US. SDZ has a few in this large aviary, a few females and a male. One of the females is on her third nesting attempt, and it’s going far more successfully than the previous two. By waiting near it, I was finally able to spot the elusive male. The curator’s priority in this aviary is to breed this species, and several changes have been made to accommodate them.
The only other zoo I can confirm holding any species is Houston, also having splendid. At least 4 species are kept privately.
If anyone else has info on sunbirds in the US, it’d be welcomed!
