@Andrew_NZP yes but wasn't all luck, I saw a keeper giving a mole-rat presentation to a school trip (how I got my naked mle-rat photos) and when she was done asked if she could provide any assistance with seeing the animal awake. She graciously agreed to throw some snacks in there, which the Opossum readily ate!
Really interesting story about this opossum for those who don't know: She was confiscated at a North Carolina Airport in a man's luggage heading from Cancun, Mexico. For some unknown reason, airport opened the bag, and the 2 month old opossum got loose in the airport for 2 days! Finally after animal control was able to wrangle her in, they brought her to the North Carolina Zoo where she stayed for the next few months. However that zoo didn't have any public display available for the animal so they put a call out to zoos that would be interested and naturally DC with it's extensive Small Mammals House answered the call. They're currently working on reversing her schedule 1 hour at a time until her exhibit will be entirely nocturnal during visiting hours (right now I believe it turns nocturnal at 3pm).
I went to the zoo yesterday, and for the first time ever I saw her outside her box. She was sitting on a branch at the top of her exhibit. I actually saw her tail for the first time. Pretty neat.
I don't know the exact time, but I wanna say it was between 12:40-1:00 PM. The exhibit was not set to nocturnal at the time, however it was noticeably darker than my previous visits. However I went again after 3:00 PM and it was nocturnal. Obviously they're changing her lighting so shes up during visitor hours, but I found it funny when we went back after 3:00 she was sound asleep (though still on the branch instead of her box).
If someone wants me to add them to the gallery I guess I could, but here's two pictures I got.
Because she was at the top of her exhibit, she was pretty much right next to the lights.
