The zoo's lions are of the subspecies P.l.krugeri, commonly known as the Transvaal Lion.Though they are "white" lions, "White African Lion" is not a synonym for the Transvaal Lion. The term "white" only refers to the colour of the lions. "White" lions are NOT their own subspecies, but merely just a leucistic variation of the Transvaal Lion. The majority of Transvaal Lions are of the normal "tawny" colour. As with "white" tiger, "white" lions, such as these, are quite inbred due to breeding specifically for colour.
