Dasyatid ray for ID at Pairi Daiza

This specimen is kept in a small shallow pool in a dark "cave" in front of the shallow "touchable" coral reef. Shares exhibit with Port Jackson shark and carpet sharks at least. ZTL doesn't list any ray for Pairi Daiza except thornyback, that obviously is not this one. Help ID!!!

This ray has been a mistery for years now. I talked to many experts but nobody is 100% sure. It's most likely a weird looking Dasyatis indeed

Oh, it's a shame that the mystery is unresolved! It always have a twisted tail or its just the casuality of the moment?

I think it always had this, that's why a friend of me thinks it's a juvenile Pastinachus sephen with a broken tail

No, I don't think it can be Pastinachus sephen. The "cowtail" or "tuft" should begin much before the tip of the tail of this specimen, so even with a broken tail it would have a part of the "tuft". Also the tail should be thicker

Yes, ofcourse it's not the P. sephen, I just wanted to show you how much possibilities there are ;)

I saw just now a photo of this specimen in a blog, labelled as Dasyatis americana :)
