@DavidBrown Yes, on the opposite side of the zoo and across the road from the main parking lot will be an 1,800 car parking garage. Something that was rumored to be the next phase after the gorilla exhibit but the master plan states it will be completed in 2023.
Turning parking lots into exhibit space seems to be a growing trend for urban zoos that are landlocked. Smithsonian National Zoo and San Diego Zoo have mentioned doing similar things at some point in the future.
I thought they already built a new parking lot and replaced the old lot with the African plains expansion. Are they going to destroy the new parking lot for this exhibit?
@Arizona Docent There are currently five parking lots at the zoo. The Safari lot that's behind/to the left of Africa, the employee lot that sometimes acts as a guest overflow lot, the newer main lot you mention, and the two Children's hospital lots (what I call them). Elephant Trek will be built over the Safari lot - the main parking space is on the complete other side of the zoo.
If I remember correctly, there is going to be an additional exhibit for argali sheep as evidenced by them on the right ride around 11:47. I don't know why the zoo hasn't mentioned them now otr have included their space in the concept art (perhaps they're too boring?), but seems cool if they could mix them in with the elephants.
