Thanks very much for all of these photos from a zoo that is not very well known outside of the continent of Africa. Having not been visited by many zoo enthusiasts, it is great to see what is actually located at the facility. How many zoos are there in South Africa?
@snowleopard You are welcome! There are quite a few more to come. I'm glad to have been able to fill in some gaps from a few of South Africa's more notable facilities, and I hope to finally put together a proper write-up like I had originally intended before life got in the way.
As far as how many zoos there are in South Africa, I am not aware of the exact number, but I do not believe there are many at all (and there are even fewer that'd be worth visiting), although it could depend on how far one stretches the definition of a "zoo". While I lived in the country, I visited all but two of the provinces and attended five zoological facilities (although the administration of Monkeyland and Bird of Eden would be horrified to be called such, but that's another story...), and I am aware of about a half a dozen or so others others, including several that are either bird or reptile exclusive. There is a strong anti-captivity sentiment in South Africa, which I imagine stems from the fact that there is so much wildlife that is readily accessible in the wild in South Africa. That said, some could consider this hypocritical given the number of private ranches and reserves that vary considerably in "wildness" and often house species/subspecies that are not native to that particular area. As well, "animal encounters" of all sorts are /everywhere/ in South Africa, although these are largely marketed towards tourists.
