At the current time only seven species of birds are kept free-ranging in the new Mangrove ecodisplays, some of them only in small numbers or even as just a single individual. However the empty frames here suggest to me that they plan or are at least considering adding more species in the future, and I surely hope they do so, because compared to the old Mangrove the new one is far poorer ornithologically. That said, it may not be so easy this time given the presence of the butterflies and the crabs.
That said, the following species are currently kept according to these signs:
- White-winged dove (Zenaida asiatica)
- Northern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis)
- Purple or yellow-legged honeycreeper (Cyanerpes caeruleus)
- Blue-backed grassquit (Volatinia jacarina)
- Fulvous whistling duck (Dendrocygna bicolor)
- Indigo bunting (Passerina cyanea)
Notice that some of these species are also kept free-ranging in the Bush or the Desert.
Unfortunately during my visit, probably due to the large number of people in the Mangrove, I only got to see the fulvous whistling ducks.
