CHINA - Sulawesi Crested Black Macaque Exhibit

Taken 9/26/18. This highly-themed exhibit complex consists of 9 outdoor exhibits, with the highlight species of giant panda.
The exhibit formerly housed white-cheeked gibbons but was terrible for them. The AZA was looking for a place to consolidate all of the remaining Sulawesi macaques in the US as they’re a phase-out species. It solved two problems at once.

@jayjds2 Certainly not all the remaining ones in the US - in the AZA certainly. This species is actually quite common in roadside collections.

@FunkyGibbon I haven’t heard of any plans to send any to Europe, although the fact that there is a strong European population for the species is the reason for the phase-out. Ideally the space for macaques left in America will be used for lion-tailed, although there’s been little news in the way of their program since DAK imported a few from Europe a while back.

@birdsandbats I am well aware of the species’ prevalence in roadside zoos. However, as they’re not managed by AZA the decisions of roadside zoos are rather irrelevant to population management in zoos as a whole.
