Antelope House: A small section of a larger display on the zoo's history, particularly during WWII. September 7, 2018.
I believe the Antelope House is the only pre-WWII building left standing at the zoo, and the small display here (which above features photos of some of the bombed elephants) is a stark reminder of a very dark time for anything living in Europe at the time. I remember visiting Wroclaw Zoo later on in the trip and being given a short history lesson by one of the staff. Wroclaw was one of the zoos Germany sent animals to as it was thought to be too far out of the way from the war to be affected. Of course the war did come and many of the animals sent there to be safe ended killed by either the bombs themselves, or by soldiers/keepers who were afraid the more dangerous species might escape into the city and injure civilians.
