For me it's been birds in the last year or two. I took a birding friend to Philly and we were both surprised by how I was usually able to at least identify the type (kingfisher, mynah, whatever), so I've started paying more attention to actual species, and I can ID most of the ones that are more common in zoos. Local birds though, not so much I think I did a good job IDing my bird photos without even checking species lists/sign photos. I just got back about 600 film photos from zoos, in comparison to the few I've uploaded for IDs, LOL.
