@birdsandbats Not on this trip, but I did six months later in Costa Rica. :)
 
@birdsandbats I'm not sure what you mean - I've seen what I notice IOC now refers to as P. martinica wild in Costa Rica, and also P. porphyrio in Portugal - but I've only seen P. poliocephalus in captivity. The only wild rallids I saw in Florida were Common Gallinule and American Coot.
 
@Maguari Purple Gallinule is P. martinica, and resident throughout the southern US into South America. I believe this is what he means, as there is no subspecies of P. porphyrio with martinicensis. He will have to confirm that though.
 
@Great Argus Yes. If I understand correctly, this species is absolutely exploding in numbers in Southern Florida. I was curious to know if Maguari had seen one, because I was curious to know how common this species is now. I saw one in Orlando on a family trip when I in first grade.
