The old dog dens at Regent's Park were on the south side of the Deer and Cattle sheds, more or less where the back wall of Land of the Lions is now. I remember seeing coyotes, dingos, dingo x singing dog hybrids and raccoon dogs there in the early 1970s. There was also a single male bush dog which I particularly wanted to see, as it was the only one in the UK and only a handful of zoos outside South America kept this species. But it was an old animal which usually stayed in its den. I only saw it on this one occasion, when it was fast asleep, so I was pleased to get this photo, inadequate as it is.This animal has the distinction of being number 1 in the Bush Dog Studbook, but of course it has no descendants. We are fortunate that we now have good numbers of bush dogs in zoos and I always enjoy watching them. Scanned from a Kodachrome transparency.
@Tim May I remember the maned wolf in the enclosures behind the sea lions, where the gibbons are now, which I guess must have been a little later: it was also a single male and the only one in the UK so I was equally keen to photograph it, as I thought I might never see another. I thought the same about the anoa in the Cotton Terraces too.
I'm very glad I was wrong three times over, but I still have the photos
